Project to Protect Parrots

Supported by the Abraham Foundation since 2022

MISSION & FOCUS

In collaboration with the Lukuru Wildlife Research Foundation, the Abraham Foundation helped launch the Project to Protect Parrots—an initiative focused on rescuing African grey parrots and combating the illegal wildlife trade. The project builds national support through media campaigns, village outreach, and legal advocacy, furthering the Foundation’s commitment to high-impact, underfunded conservation efforts in the Congo Basin.

IMPACT

15+ illegal trade operations intercepted or reported.

30+ wildlife officers trained across Kinshasa and key trade points.

15+ public education campaigns launched in high-risk trade zones.

3 provinces with anti-trade law, building momentum for a national law.

This project launched the first formal surveys of Grey Parrots in key trade hotspots and has worked with local authorities to disrupt trafficking networks. Over 600 parrots have been rescued, with more than 250 successfully rehabilitated and released. The team has supported over 40 confiscations, helped establish anti-trade laws in interior provinces, and is building momentum for national legislation. Two local community associations now protect key feeding and nesting areas, and 15+ outreach campaigns have raised awareness about new no-trade laws.

Terese and John Hart

Terese and John Hart are pioneering biologists whose decades of work in the Democratic Republic of Congo led to the discovery of the Lesula monkey and the creation of Lomami National Park in 2016. Co-founders of the TL2 Project and the Lukuru Wildlife Research Foundation, they’ve championed science-based conservation, trained Congolese field teams, and led anti-poaching efforts in one of Africa’s most remote and biologically rich forest regions. Their impact on the Congo Basin's wildlife and communities is profound and enduring.

Parrots are vanishing before our eyes. With the Abraham Foundation’s support, we’re not just documenting their decline—we’re actively changing their future.

— Terese Hart, Co-Founder
