The Bonobo Trust

Supported by the Abraham Foundation since 2023

MISSION & FOCUS

The Bonobo Trust safeguards the future of bonobo, the world’s least-understood great ape, by protecting their habitat, supporting local conservation leadership, and advancing global awareness of their unique intelligence and vulnerability.

IMPACT

5,000+ hectares of bonobo habitat under protection.

6 active ranger patrol teams trained and equipped.

3 forest communities engaged in long-term co-management agreements.

200+ local students reached through bonobo education initiatives.

Habitat protection has expanded across key bonobo range through community-based forest agreements, while frontline rangers have received ongoing support with salaries and essential gear. The program has funded critical ecological and behavioral research to better understand bonobo populations and supported women-led patrol teams and environmental education in local villages. Conservation storytelling has also been amplified through film, media, and global advocacy efforts.

Meet the Team

Nancy Abraham

Nancy Abraham, founder of the Abraham Foundation, is a longtime supporter of bonobo conservation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. For over two decades, she has backed critical efforts to protect bonobos and their forest habitat. Their matriarchal, peace-loving society is what inspired her to help establish the Bonobo Trust, a hub for bonobo research and protection. Nancy’s love for this lesser-known great ape has guided years of behind-the-scenes work, helping fund research, field teams, and protected area expansion. Her vision and commitment have made her a quiet force in safeguarding one of humanity’s closest relatives.

Bonobos are not just part of the forest, they are part of who we are. Protecting them protects our future
